<p>Disembark at Katakolon port to start our tour to Ancient Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games. The first Olympiad was held in 776 B.C. in honor of Olympian Zeus and the last In 394 AD ( after exactly 1170 years )<br />The sanctuary, of Ancient Olympia, known as the Altis, consists of various buildings such as the Temple of Zeus, which once housed the Golden and ivory statue of Zeus (one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World), the Temple of Hera, the Pelopion and the area of the altar, where the sacrifices were made. <br />The hippodrome and later stadium were also on the east side,while the west side houses the Palaestra, the workshop of Pheidias and the Gymnasion .</p>
<p>Just a 10-minute walk from the site is the archaeological museum, presenting the long history of the most celebrated sanctuary of antiquity.<br />In the museum you can admire the sculptured ornaments from the Temple of Zeus, the statue of Hermes, a masterpiece carved by one of the most important Greek sculptor Praxiteles.<br />In addition the Head of Hera and the helmet of Miltiades, the Athenian General during Athens 'Golden Age.'<br />Afterwards, enjoy a short stop at the modern town of Olympia for free time before returning back to the cruise ship.</p>
