Our tour starts with a drive to Kanoni (the name taken from an old cannon still existing in the area) where we admire the famous mouse island “Pontikonisi”, the landmark of Corfu. The myth says that Pontikonisi is the petrified boat of Ulysses, that Poseidon sunk to prevent him from going to Ithaca. Corfu was the last stop that Ulysses made before finally arriving at his home island. Continue to the Achilleion, the fairytale palace constructed under the rule of the Empress Elizabeth of Austria, known as Sissi, who deeply admired the ancient Greek mythology and spirit. Once inside the palace, you have the opportunity to visit the impressive rooms and the striking gardens, boasting exotic trees and flowers and commanding a breathtaking view of the Ionian Sea. Admire the Terrace of the Muses, adorned with statues of the nine muses and the imposing figures of “Achilles Victorious” and “Achilles Dying”.
Continue with a walking tour around the picturesque Old Town of Corfu, along the Venetian fortresses and neo-classical buildings. Take a step back in time and stroll through the arcades of the Liston Square, once the palace stables and catch a glimpse of the 300-year old church of St. Spyridon, boasting a priceless collection of icons and gifts offered to the patron saint of the island. Free time to browse through the shops, before returning to the port to re-embark to the cruise ship.
