Lesvos is the third largest island of Greece and was once a major cultural center, known for its Philosophical Academy, where Epicurus and Aristotle taught. It was the birthplace of the of the great poet Sappho, Trepand, the "father of Greek music" and of Arion, who influenced the later writers Sophocles and Alcaeus.Drive to Petra village, where according to the legend Achilles anchored on his way to Troy.
The village is dominated by the Church of "Panagia Glykofiloussa" dedicated to Virgin Mary, built on top of a rock, which you reach by climbing the 114 steps carved into the stone. From the church the view of Petra and the surrounding sea and countryside is spectacular extending all the way to the coast of Asia Minor.
Close to the church is the House of Vareltzidena, a well preserved traditional mansion typical of the architecture of 18th century. Continue to Molyvos, one of the most beautiful towns of the island, situated on a small mountain topped by a medieval castle, built by the Byzantines. Visit of the castle and walk through the narrow streets down to the port.Drive to Mantamados and visit the famous monastery dedicated to the Archangel Michael .
Continue to Mytilini, the capital town of the island built on 7 hills.
We will then visit the Archaeological Museum of Mytilene, which houses the archaeological findings of Lesvos. The collections exhibited contain various findings from all over the island such as prehistoric potteries and clay statuettes, Geometric and Archaic vessels and finds dating from the Classical and Hellenistic period.
Free time in the town before returning back to the cruise ship.
